Oshima and Tateyama Cups (500-750 ml) - nerikomi collection
Note! When ordering a set, please specify your chosen variants (from those available)!
This collection was born from a fascination with the layers of earth, ash, and snow, their natural patterns, contrasts, and how they can tell the story of a place.
Oshima and Tateyama mugs are made using the nerikomi technique – a traditional Japanese ceramic technique where different colored clays are combined to create patterns within the ceramic body itself. Each mug is made on a potter's wheel, and the careful arrangement and shaping of the two types of clay result in a unique pattern appearing once the vessel is formed.
The inspiration for the cream-red version is Oshima – a Japanese volcanic island whose landscape has been shaped by ash and successive layers of volcanic earth. Although Oshima is still on my travel list, I had the opportunity to observe a similar combination of snow and volcanic ash during my climbs of Etna and Tateyama.
It is these two landscapes that inspired the two versions of the collection:
Tateyama – white and black, inspired by snow covering layers of dark, volcanic ash.
Oshima – cream and red, referencing the warm tones of the earth and the island's volcanic layers.
The mugs can remain more raw and natural, showcasing the structure and pattern of the clay, or they can be additionally glazed on the outside, which gives their surface a completely different character.
From the Oshima collection, there are 5 raw and 3 glazed mugs with a capacity of approx. 500 ml. Each of them has different proportions of red and beige clay, so the pattern of each piece is completely unique.
The collection also includes one unique, larger model – a ribbed mug with a capacity of approx. 750 ml. Its form resembles a tankard more than a classic mug and was created for those who like larger, more distinctive vessels.
This collection is for people who appreciate alternative ceramic techniques, sensory experiences, and nature. For those who want not only to use a vessel but also to observe its pattern, touch its texture, and discover the details created during the making process.
Material: stoneware made from two types of clay, combined using the nerikomi technique.
Capacity:
• Oshima / Tateyama mugs – approx. 500 ml
• Ribbed model – approx. 750 ml
Features: each piece is hand-formed and fired at 1210°C. For the glazed version, food-safe and safe Amaco/Mayco glazes were used.
Usage: suitable for hot and cold beverages. Glazed versions can be used in a dishwasher and microwave.
Each piece is unique and handmade, so you receive a one-of-a-kind vessel. Handicraft is not mass production – the pattern created using the nerikomi technique is never identical, and the proportions of colors and the arrangement of layers may differ between individual mugs.
